Rescued Pit Bull Maya Named Animal Miracle Foundation Hero Dog of the Year!

Rescued Pit Bull Maya Named Animal Miracle Foundation Hero Dog of the Year!

by Matt Miner
As this blog continues to expand we keep running across more and more stories of heroic pit bulls who stare death in the face in order to protect other animals, their owners, and even strangers.  The media loves to demonize this breed of dog, and won’t cover the very heroic actions of a “pit bull” type dog, though literally hundreds of news stories will be vomited out if there’s an incident where a “pit bull” type dog can be shown negatively.
This story is a bit old, but it’s new to us, so we’d like to share it with you.  Stories like this one help break the poisoned and faulty public perception of the “bloodthirsty pit bull” and are by themselves, good arguments against BSL.
Meet Maya.  Maya was honored as a hero for ignoring real and violent danger to protect her owner Angela Marcelino, who had adopted Maya from a shelter when the dog was only 3 months old.
Good call to adopt from a shelter, because we doubt any designer dog from a high priced breeder or pet store would have so valiantly risked their life to successfully defend their guardian like Maya the rescued pit bull did.
Maya protected Angela from a violent attacker, saving Angela’s life, and later when DNA tests were done on a drop of blood left above Maya’s right eye, police were able to identify and arrest Angela’s assailant.  Way to go Maya!
We at BSL news congratulate Angela’s decision to rescue, rather than buy, her dog and we hope Maya and Angela have a great life together.  The Animal Miracle Foundation named Maya the Hero Dog of 2008, and we here at BSL News are now very happy to induct Maya into the BSL News Pit Bull Heroes Hall of Fame.
