The debate over the “Pit Bull” ordinance in Mt. Gilead was settled by vote at the Sept. 2 Village Council meeting.

Codes and Regulations Chairman John Curtis said that the committee met prior to meeting and discussed the current ordinances, specifically the “Pit Bull” ordinance. He noted that they had reviewed some of the information that had been provided to council and he recommended that council repeal the “pit bull” ordinance and amend the current animal ordinance that can be defended.

With a vote of 3-2 the Mount Gilead Village Council voted to repeal the ordinance that bans Pit Bulls from within the village of Mount Gilead in favor of ‘stronger owner responsibility’ ordinances. With council member Tim Clapper absent, council members Kline and Gress voted against repealing the ban, with council members Shaffer, Hines and Curtis voting in favor of repealing the ordinance, which village solicitor Matt Griffith has described as “unenforceable.” This will enable village solicitor Griffith to write an amended animal ordinance repealing the specific section dealing with pit bulls and writing one ordinance dealing with vicious animals. Once it is written, there will be three readings before it is passed.
