2013 was definitely the year of the pit bull. We are so encouraged by the positive groundswell that is taking place around this wonderful breed. All over the country, breed specific legislation is being overturned in favor of more general dangerous dog laws that place accountability on dog owners. And over the past year, we have seen lots of positive headlines featuring heroic pit bulls, putting their lives on the line to save their owners or even perfect strangers. Take a look at some of our favorite hero pit bulls from 2013:
Baby, the 10-year old pit bull who saved humans and dogs from a house fire
When a house fire broke out overnight, Baby was the only one to smell the smoke. After waking up her humans and leading them to safety, she went back in to help with her dog-siblings. One dog was hiding under a bed, and she dragged it to safety. Read the full story >
Creature, the 2-year old pit bull who found an elderly woman lost in the woods
Creature was out for her nightly walk when she noticed something different. She took off barking and discovered an 89-year old woman who suffers from dementia. The woman had been lost outside for hours, barefoot and covered in mud. Read the full story >
Lefty, the heroic pup who took a bullet to stop home intruders from getting to her family
Four intruders broke into Lefty's family's home in the middle of the night and she knew just what to do. When she jumped at one of the men, she was shot in the right shoulder, shattering a bone and tearing through muscle. Social media rallied behind Lefty, and helped pay for treatment to amputate her right, front leg. Read the full story >
Onyx, the 9-month old pit bull puppy who alerted his family to a house fire, sustaining severe burns in the process
When a fire broke out in a Florida home overnight, a family awoke to their dog barking. Everyone escaped unscathed, except for Onyx, who sustained 1st and 2nd degree burned all over his body after having caught fire. Read the full story >
Tatortot, the rescued pit bull who alerted his owner to her son's dangerously low blood sugar levels
Tatortot began to bark and whimper in the middle of the night, running between his owner's room and her 4-year old son's. When the owner checked on her son, he was completely unresponsive. Jack, the pit bull who rescued his cat friend from two attacking coyotes
While Jack's owner was deployed in Afghanistan, his owner's mother took care of him. Jack and his caretaker's cat, Kitty, began to bond as soon as they took up residence under the same roof. When Kitty was attacked by two coyotes, Jack sprung into to action to save his friend. Read the full story >
Chako, the pit bull who was stabbed over a dozen times after protecting his owner from an abusive partner
When Chako's owner was attacked by her abusive partner, he jumped to her defense. Unfortunately for Chako, the abuser turned his attack to the dog, and stabbed him over a dozen times. Thanks to the support of over 200 people on Facebook and help from the Humane Society, Chako got the medical attention he needed and is recovering well. Read the full story >
Mercey, the 4-year old pit bull who protected her owner from 4 home invaders armed with a machete
The men and a teenage boy forced their way into a 30-year old woman's home armed with a machete. Mercey jumped to her owner's defense when the men became violent, and suffered life-threatening injuries as a result. Read the full story >
Sammie, the brave pit bull who saved her family from a house fire
It was early morning and Sammie the pit bull woke up her owner by jumping on and off the bed. The house had caught fire with 6 family members inside. Due to Sammie's detection skills, the whole family got out safely. Read the full story >
Elle, the therapy pit bull named American Hero Dog of 2013 by American Humane Association
Elle the pit bull is a therapy dog that participates in a children's reading program, teaches about dog safety and helps people overcome their fear of dogs.
